Key cards

  • Quickdraw Synchron

Top tier

Key cards

  • Blackwing - Bora the Spear
  • Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow
  • Black Whirlwind

Play Black Whirlwind before you Normal Summon a Blackwing, so the summon searches another one. Keep Kalut in hand for a surprise 1400 ATK boost.

Top tier

Hero Beat

BeatdownEasy

How it wins

Attacks every turn with solid HERO monsters. Gemini Spark and Hero Blast destroy their cards while drawing or adding more, and Miracle Fusion makes a big Fusion out of the graveyard.

Key cards

  • Elemental HERO Neos Alius
  • Gemini Spark
  • Miracle Fusion

Tip

Miracle Fusion uses monsters in your graveyard, so a destroyed HERO is not wasted: banish it with a WATER monster to make Absolute Zero.

Top tier

Key cards

  • Deep Sea Diva
  • Caius the Shadow Monarch

Key cards

  • Gladiator Beast Bestiari
  • Test Tiger

Key cards

  • Treeborn Frog
  • Raiza the Storm Monarch
  • Miracle Fusion

Tip

Raiza puts a card back on top of their Deck, so they draw it again instead of a new card. Use it on their best card when you are ahead.

Key cards

  • Archlord Kristya

Tip

Key cards

  • Flamvell Firedog
  • Flamvell Magician
  • Rekindling

Tip

Rekindling only revives FIRE monsters with exactly 200 DEF, and they leave in the End Phase, so use them for a Synchro Summon before that.

Fun

Necrovalley turns off the graveyard for both players and makes every Gravekeeper 500 stronger, then they attack every turn.

Key cards

  • Necrovalley
  • Gravekeeper's Commandant
  • Gravekeeper's Spy

Tip

Discard Gravekeeper's Commandant to add Necrovalley from your Deck. Without it, your Gravekeepers are much weaker.

More to learn

The game as it was in spring 2010. Synchro Monsters, a full back row of traps, and no Xyz yet.

What Edison is

Edison is the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG as it was in spring 2010. It uses the Forbidden and Limited list of 1 March 2010 and only the cards that were out by then.

The name comes from the Shonen Jump Championship held in Edison, New Jersey, on 24 and 25 April 2010. It was the last SJC and the biggest, with 2,175 players. Jeff Jones won it with a Quickdraw Plant deck.

The format lasted until The Shining Darkness came out in North America in May 2010. Many different decks could win, which is a big reason people still play it.

The card pool here is Format Library's Edison list: 3,675 cards, with boosters up to Absolute Powerforce and Duelist Pack: Kaiba.

Rules that differ from today

The duel engine here plays these 2010 rules for you. Life Points start at 8000 and the hand limit is 6, as today.

The first player drawsThe player who goes first draws a card on turn 1 too, so they start that turn with 6 cards. The rule that skips this draw came in 2014. Nobody can attack on the first turn.
Synchro SummonsSend a Tuner and any other face-up monsters you control to the graveyard. If their Levels add up to a Synchro Monster's Level, Special Summon it from your Extra Deck.
No Xyz, Pendulum or LinkThose came later: Xyz in 2011, Pendulum in 2014, Link in 2017. The Extra Deck holds Fusion and Synchro Monsters only, up to 15 cards.
Five Monster ZonesThere is no Extra Monster Zone. A monster from the Extra Deck can go to any of your five Monster Zones, so you can fill the field with Synchros.
One Field Spell for both playersOnly one Field Spell can be face up on the whole field. Activating a new one destroys the old one, even your opponent's. Today each player has their own Field Zone.
Priority after a summonAfter you summon a monster, if the summon did not start a chain, you may use an Ignition Effect first, as Chain Link 1. Your opponent can still respond, but your effect is already on the chain. Today this right is gone.
Triggers at the same timeEffects that trigger together go on the chain in this order: the turn player's mandatory ones, the other player's mandatory ones, the turn player's optional ones, then the other player's optional ones. This changed in 2017.
Two 0 ATK monstersWhen two Attack Position monsters with 0 ATK battle, both are destroyed. This changed in 2011.
Trap MonstersA Trap Monster uses one of your Monster Zones and one of your Spell and Trap Zones while it is on the field.
The Damage StepOnly some cards can be used in the Damage Step: Counter Traps, cards that change ATK or DEF until damage is calculated, and effects that happen by themselves, like flip effects. Most other cards must wait.
Card textsSome cards had different text in 2010. Brain Control could take any face-up monster, even a Synchro. The duel lobby has a Card texts switch: Original texts or Today's texts.

Your first duel

  1. Open Play

Go to the Edison lobby and keep Computer picked.

  2. Pick an easy deck

Hero Beat, Machina Gadget and Gravekeeper are the easiest to start with.

  3. Set the computer to Easy

Move up to Normal and Hard once you win.

  4. Draw on turn 1

Even going first, you draw. You still cannot attack that turn.

  5. Watch the back row

Most decks Set several traps. Think about Mirror Force before you attack with everything.

  6. Look for Synchros

A Tuner plus monsters whose Levels add up to a Synchro Monster's Level lets you summon it from the Extra Deck.
